The decade I lived in the US, I pretended it didn't exist. <br />
This was made easier by the fact that I hate and despise shopping.<br />
<br />
That was in the pre-fabric-addiction days, obviously.<br />
<br />
Luckily for me, my good friends - my <em>Shopping Advocates</em> - at <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/" target="_blank">Hawthorne Threads</a> kindly let me know that if I were the kind of person who loved fabric, I might enjoy their store soon after Thanksgiving.<br />
<br />
And hoo, boy, did I ever!<br />
<br />
Look what just arrived in the mail - yay! When you live on a whole nother continent, this passes for BIG NEWS! Oh, who am I kidding? Fabric is always big news. Right?<br />
<br />
These are for my purple and fuchsia quilt, and I confess, I am rather in love with the eggplant solid, yum.<br />
<br />

These were Just Because. <br />
They all match. And are village-y. And just adorable. And they stuck a bird on it.<br />

These yellows are for a wall hanging that features a glowing light. I have no idea how I'm going to create a glow. So I just keep collecting yellows in the hope that one day, it will come to me.<br />
<br />
By the way, you totally can't tell how beautiful these fabrics are in this photo. But trust me. They are beautiful.<br />

<br />
I started by using sewing chalk, and my usual folksy philosophy to stitching anything: a little back-stitch never hurt anyone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-V1Ol2KgX1Hb44XpPOz_tO_7yhmYtZ2IJ1OZqomm04_nDbOFOpQv6Z90-3AxXwciAcJk1G-dxBOM1cJu5chokfnjZ471LgL3Xirrjl8ZkFins107OrU69xeXij010925xxFTf7m5zAdk/s1600/IMG_0600.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-V1Ol2KgX1Hb44XpPOz_tO_7yhmYtZ2IJ1OZqomm04_nDbOFOpQv6Z90-3AxXwciAcJk1G-dxBOM1cJu5chokfnjZ471LgL3Xirrjl8ZkFins107OrU69xeXij010925xxFTf7m5zAdk/s320/IMG_0600.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, it might not hurt. But it ain't helping any.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I hunted around, and discovered the insanely phenomenal website of Mary Corbet, <a href="http://www.needlenthread.com/" target="_blank">Needle 'n Thread</a>, where Mary explains everything hand embroidered in great, fabulous detail. This is like a drug for any stitchy perfectionist. Big love. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I turned to my non-Google resource: my quilt group. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a good opportunity to introduce my stitching buddies: we quilt, sew garments, knit, crotchet, embroider and grow food. We are a bunch of 30- and 40- somethings from the USA and UK, all living now within a 5 minute radius in a small town in Israel. We get together when we can to admire each other's works in progress, share books, celebrate birthdays, and laugh a lot. Between the 7 of us, we have over 30 children, and nearly all of us hold down out-of-the-home jobs, so our meetings are few and far between. But very wonderful when they happen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9X_xAGkbmmAiU7CHzHqeUTm2JZL1iBi2qcloKM9Myilw8bV5gaeuXN4lYqF22NxQu6Zn4AXKP0hD7itFSqtu_nNlbXIcFwgD9bN7OvgjaE-7GZCVYKaG90K3Pwz7f2-yh3j5vwqhn77g/s1600/IMG_0451.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9X_xAGkbmmAiU7CHzHqeUTm2JZL1iBi2qcloKM9Myilw8bV5gaeuXN4lYqF22NxQu6Zn4AXKP0hD7itFSqtu_nNlbXIcFwgD9bN7OvgjaE-7GZCVYKaG90K3Pwz7f2-yh3j5vwqhn77g/s640/IMG_0451.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Quiltmeet! Enjoying a rare breakfast date.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These friends are my greatest resource for just about anything stitchy. We email each other constantly. They are the kind of people who can say right off the bat, "Oh yeah. Water soluble stabiliser," and "I have some if you need." That's what I call <em>friends</em>. And then my stabiliser-giving friend gave me a tip: don't trace the design onto the stabiliser in black, because it won't show on the black background fabric. Smart lady.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I bought a WHITE GEL PEN. I ♥ my gel pen. It is perfect for the job and makes me happy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I printed out my text in a few sizes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I traced it onto the stabiliser with my AWESOME gel pen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put it in a hoop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Didja notice?<br />
How I wrote so nicely and neatly near the edge of the stabiliser?<br />
And how completely USELESS that is when hooping up?<br />
<br />
I wrote it again,<em> in the middle of the stabiliser</em>, and put it in a hoop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfhk_710feIrb4WbvsLlgC5yNC6EqOwrGUiNZFtBH_NEjfoHaK4GuyXcSxFm68rYeoCvnUfQSAwjSF3wrYjljyAtQDkLuaijT-DIkqX-HcEc90C0EkJom-wMSbmITpw3LWs4J9tFXazik/s1600/IMG_0673.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfhk_710feIrb4WbvsLlgC5yNC6EqOwrGUiNZFtBH_NEjfoHaK4GuyXcSxFm68rYeoCvnUfQSAwjSF3wrYjljyAtQDkLuaijT-DIkqX-HcEc90C0EkJom-wMSbmITpw3LWs4J9tFXazik/s400/IMG_0673.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And started stitching.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I backstitched around the edge, just like Mary Corbet told me to, and I'm using one strand of thread to ensure smoothness because she told me to, too. Clearly this is never, ever going to get finished. Ever. But I shall keep sewing on, as the hand-stitching is very calming and peaceful. And because my sister might kill me if I don't.</div>

I kinda missed November. Like, completely. I'm so sorry.<br />
<br />
I mean, <em>really</em> sorry. Because I'd much rather have been sewing than arranging my son's surgery, and holding his hand through it. <br />
Good news! The surgery is behind us, and he is doing great!<br />
So that little no-sew excuse is over. Phew.<br />
<br />
While we were juggling that whole hospitalisation thing, my Mum came to visit.<br />
<br />
And, after leafing through a variety of quilting magazines I've accrued over more than a decade she decided to learn to quilt. And that I would teach her. In 1 day.<br />
<br />
(To the soundtrack of "Rocky"...) <br />
<br />
We used scraps to learn to cut, lay out, chain piece, and iron. We were awesome.<br />
<br />

She then did it all again with non-scraps, and turned it all into a quilted place-mat with hand-stitched binding (hand stitching was finished after she flew home) - check out the mitred corners, next-to-the-ditch machine quilting and neatly meeting corners.<br />

As you can tell, my friend Leya deserves a stack of books behind every curtain, and a bouquet of flowers by her front door every night, just because. <br />
<br />
Now, who are you going to make one for?<br />

She and I got to talking about negative space and she kind of leapt out of her chair in excitement.<br />
Which I kind of appreciated. <br />
<br />
Then I got to work in Visio (which isn't work, it's fun,) and created these sketches.<br />
They don't reflect the true colours of the fabrics, but hopefully they will give my sister a few ideas of what a <strike>mini quilt</strike> challah cover can be.<br />

She might ask for a rematch using a rectangle outline, not square<br />
<br />
She might dither over the inclusion of white.<br />
<br />
She might decide to revert to burgandy velvet with a gold fringe trim. (If she does, I ain't makin' it.)<br />
<br />
But I'm liking it. I might have to make a couple of extras. For challah emergencies.<br />

<br />
While the coffee table with Liberty tablecloth is totally fab, and could really shine as is for a cocktail party, I felt that for the coffee break it was intended for, it did need some chairs. For a little comfort and convivial spirit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-oAfJiruIR9LxPX7X2iB_M8QeQllj271UAoKw9We0UP9vtFjXmKgbGUDvqry5PUKCoojYD25Q3mtl8tQdh6yAHsSxUPftI89SGvHCbNKGe-hYbCyAgHgwgPFH-fRy6MjLXTpESAyA_rU/s1600/IMG_0176.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-oAfJiruIR9LxPX7X2iB_M8QeQllj271UAoKw9We0UP9vtFjXmKgbGUDvqry5PUKCoojYD25Q3mtl8tQdh6yAHsSxUPftI89SGvHCbNKGe-hYbCyAgHgwgPFH-fRy6MjLXTpESAyA_rU/s640/IMG_0176.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I envisioned some neat iron chairs, the kind you find in real live cafes, but guess what?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid_a3zfu5kmEAPIATagnjwozR4V9FAqhwZszfdKGrzsIqneAK59p6dgkcyISIY5CRixesoUZp0HgR929GE7cAbJq1RYr3UzWX5DPJDxw1aCie7LuVtuaEj77O-bvZua1tMQNhDkt_oNhU/s1600/IMG_0395.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid_a3zfu5kmEAPIATagnjwozR4V9FAqhwZszfdKGrzsIqneAK59p6dgkcyISIY5CRixesoUZp0HgR929GE7cAbJq1RYr3UzWX5DPJDxw1aCie7LuVtuaEj77O-bvZua1tMQNhDkt_oNhU/s400/IMG_0395.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Real live ironwork chairs do not lean against a backdrop of real live letters. No, siree, they do not.<br />
Because if they did, they would be almost invisible.<br />
Ask me how I know.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2vcVRHb9rS6TsFTr0rD1WA2t5N1giChz1eVLf502doT0q057iV2K9l9J-sc5xYK5ZhGdEE7wq-83PmfUnfisrIifg_J17sHocVBBp010-EesIPbUjSbENOR0Q9ZZrcc41KvsJlzXc91I/s1600/IMG_0398.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2vcVRHb9rS6TsFTr0rD1WA2t5N1giChz1eVLf502doT0q057iV2K9l9J-sc5xYK5ZhGdEE7wq-83PmfUnfisrIifg_J17sHocVBBp010-EesIPbUjSbENOR0Q9ZZrcc41KvsJlzXc91I/s400/IMG_0398.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So I became an upholsterer. We crafty people do this. We dabble.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhER6ZgdCv7m308syAEJ7vJX4hd0hyphenhyphenTwAYa0L5RSisVbZ6G-gC7nwTSm6ZrkFX22CCSj271Ty_CQxm8o7HTNpTyn4ppT6KBOm8mdv84quM1JoKWGU2r-42Z4-a_2BIMY67Rc9OjnIP5lOs/s1600/IMG_0400.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhER6ZgdCv7m308syAEJ7vJX4hd0hyphenhyphenTwAYa0L5RSisVbZ6G-gC7nwTSm6ZrkFX22CCSj271Ty_CQxm8o7HTNpTyn4ppT6KBOm8mdv84quM1JoKWGU2r-42Z4-a_2BIMY67Rc9OjnIP5lOs/s400/IMG_0400.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I backed the eyelet with some interfacing to help hold in the edges, then I cut it into teeny shapes so that they would nestle perfectly between the ironwork. Then I machine stitched each piece while holding it in place with a tapestry needle (my friendly, dependable awl.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDYh17B2FMTxjQM3C9ArIC7GLrNRS88FhzKh3UjdVG2lClb8vbtqJcjuosg2jaUd-rpKfBIvnTRtUYuwJOZnAm9kBo0ceuTt4gtceCok8GRf331hLU4A9BgTZ6gdjG3fQ-xfM4T0ijohE/s1600/IMG_0415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDYh17B2FMTxjQM3C9ArIC7GLrNRS88FhzKh3UjdVG2lClb8vbtqJcjuosg2jaUd-rpKfBIvnTRtUYuwJOZnAm9kBo0ceuTt4gtceCok8GRf331hLU4A9BgTZ6gdjG3fQ-xfM4T0ijohE/s640/IMG_0415.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Don't you want to sit here with a friend? I do.<br />
<br />
(For those of you who spotted the Amazing Floating Chair, do not be alarmed. It is magic and can do this.) (Ultra-stabilising legs will soon be stitched on; watch this space.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Brief But Significant Shopping News: I bought some Kona Indigo and Lime, and love 'em!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lime is for my <a href="http://pomegranatequilts.blogspot.co.il/2013/07/wow-just-wow.html" target="_blank">plaid logs</a>, I <em>think</em>, and Indigo - oh how do I love thee? - for a new mini project. Involving lemons and pomegranates. More next week...</div>

<br />
But today, I am a<em> Quilter</em>.<br />
<br />
Behind my sewing desk there is a white wall, much like all the other white-washed walls in my home. I finally decided to hang some inspiration up there, and found a joyful, amazing rail thingie (that's a technical term,) with metal hooks, and little plastic hanging containers, and it's a whole new world out there, baby.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn3oPgol8-koGjFq68O2YYifFm3C9Ql446vM9wO2sCfGZchEd98iaVty47ucuAGvMAAfgdMCfV8H5_R-HN_JDbo2i_FNkNzuRwklO2xuSztp23upRua9kupDRAii5uNVJXBBRP-lA6KJI/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn3oPgol8-koGjFq68O2YYifFm3C9Ql446vM9wO2sCfGZchEd98iaVty47ucuAGvMAAfgdMCfV8H5_R-HN_JDbo2i_FNkNzuRwklO2xuSztp23upRua9kupDRAii5uNVJXBBRP-lA6KJI/s640/IMG_0404.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every single piece of art on this wall is meaningful to me. The "Welcome Baby" sampler was made by my Grandma. The apple was drawn by my 7-year-old daughter. The painting says "This is a picture of me and grandpa going to the zoo and seeing the peacocks."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy sigh.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIHfYwAbSCEaSa5-Y1WjX90HTAyHAtJPNbZPpVa6rvE9H1Po7MG5Eoo7Ys1P4iXJaGAf0IMZRmAXf7q0vOhb-GDpQvRGUwNCHkH9ESi0ak4PjwXl5rhMSfeKmiSJTUHP248NScsWd_URo/s1600/IMG_0393.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIHfYwAbSCEaSa5-Y1WjX90HTAyHAtJPNbZPpVa6rvE9H1Po7MG5Eoo7Ys1P4iXJaGAf0IMZRmAXf7q0vOhb-GDpQvRGUwNCHkH9ESi0ak4PjwXl5rhMSfeKmiSJTUHP248NScsWd_URo/s640/IMG_0393.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But it's the hanging rulers that make me feel like a real sewist. And the hanging embroidery hoops. And the scissors! And the rotary cutter in a little bucket! The nice people at Ikea thought this was for a kitchen, which just goes to show what <em>they</em> know.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNrvnopi0ZBnmnseoiZ7T8__ZslDmo_u5wqWpGWiAxwzRhy8EGyIsuyYEUp-bqqKn2Ton2N-w1yN7DFkUkr8ouHYa7PVGyZr57lKH_BVq5hZBprh5nbtrfjA77F8M4KbjRWaJKFsBonco/s1600/IMG_0392.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNrvnopi0ZBnmnseoiZ7T8__ZslDmo_u5wqWpGWiAxwzRhy8EGyIsuyYEUp-bqqKn2Ton2N-w1yN7DFkUkr8ouHYa7PVGyZr57lKH_BVq5hZBprh5nbtrfjA77F8M4KbjRWaJKFsBonco/s640/IMG_0392.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Perched on the filing cabinet is a bag from Liberty's (swoon), and my cake stand of threads, and a bunch of other lovely stuff.<br />
<br />
I haven't sewn much in the last few months, and for now, I am mostly just reminding myself what fabric looks like. But this wall of colour lifts my spirits, and it'll be here when I'm ready to pick up a needle and thread, and be inspired.<br />
<br />

<br />
I don't know how to write this post.<br />
But I am sharing with my quilting community that my Dad is gone. He passed last week.<br />
<br />
We are all grateful that his suffering is over. (Want to vent about liver cancer? I'm here for you. Really.) But the truth is, I am not grateful at all that he is not here. It is simply not possible that he is not here.<br />
<br />
He was funny, smart and engaging. Quietly and without fanfare, he listened to people and held their hands when they needed it most. He and my mother loved each other dearly, and I am grateful to have had them as my parents, as they modeled not only a wonderful marriage, but also how to inject each day with meaning, and how to be kind and thoughtful members of a community. I love you, Dad.<br />

Luckily, my sister bought me a gift certificate for my birthday for <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/" target="_blank">Hawthorne Threads</a>, yay!<br />
So look what I bought today!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/images/robert_kaufman/300/robert_kaufman_house_designer_cozy_cotton_flannel_typewriter_text_in_grey.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Robert Kaufman House Designer - Cozy Cotton Flannel - Typewriter Text in Grey" border="0" height="200" id="focal_image" src="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/images/robert_kaufman/300/robert_kaufman_house_designer_cozy_cotton_flannel_typewriter_text_in_grey.jpg" title="Robert Kaufman House Designer - Cozy Cotton Flannel - Typewriter Text in Grey" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/images/michael_miller/300/patty_young_just_my_type_letterpress_in_gray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Patty Young - Just My Type - Letterpress in Gray" border="0" height="200" id="focal_image" src="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/images/michael_miller/300/patty_young_just_my_type_letterpress_in_gray.jpg" title="Patty Young - Just My Type - Letterpress in Gray" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, all grey.
They called out to me in monochromatic unison.<br />
They said "Add ME to your stash! Add ME!"
<br />
So I did.<br />
<br />
That's the kind of gal I am. Always ready to rescue a lone piece of grey, texty fabric.<br />

Just wow.Ha ha, did I really mark June as a month in which I barely sewed?<br />
<br />
Try July on for size, sister!<br />
<br />
I live in a rather, ahem, <em>warm</em> part of the globe, and some days I feel like I'm breathing through molasses; not conducive to productivity, so much.<br />
<br />
Also there's the small matter of my father who is not well on a whole nother continent, a situation lending itself both to stress, and to mind-numbing travel.<br />
<br />
And did I mention the summer? Because it's here. And so are my kids. And yet my job continues jauntily; what is THAT about?<br />
<br />
So. Deep breath.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A teeny, <em>tiny</em> amount of chaos may have inadvertently entered my life.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, I am trying so hard to pursue the whole sewing thing. Because it is lovely for my soul. Which should count for something, no?<br />
<br />
I've made a couple of zippy bag gifts, and am working on my log cabins.<br />
<br />
See this neutral one? Ain't she purdy?<br />
<br />

<br />
And at the end of the day, they are not making me happy. Or not happy <em>enough</em>. Not completely, fulfillingly <em>thrilled</em>. And it came to me - via lots of marvelous other quilters' blogs - my blocks need a frame. A nice solid, defining, containing frame. <br />
<br />
So. I think red. A nice deep red. But deep red is my favourite colour. In fact, if you looked at my wardrobe you might think it was my <em>only</em> colour. (Not true. Sometimes I wear burgandy.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC1LMOj9Utf3ovXKdca8z91MQ-b2anMFF4KD6C2cICmF1zKg2ime-sTvRUPBuPLKZ2CT8ebAiNtZyRw47z0BeHi0o1OpN_myyDFxa_rcGd3jL0NU_Wh3l9y55O1Y58OUqt2djP_7776HQ/s1600/IMG_0304.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC1LMOj9Utf3ovXKdca8z91MQ-b2anMFF4KD6C2cICmF1zKg2ime-sTvRUPBuPLKZ2CT8ebAiNtZyRw47z0BeHi0o1OpN_myyDFxa_rcGd3jL0NU_Wh3l9y55O1Y58OUqt2djP_7776HQ/s320/IMG_0304.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So maybe I'm biased about the whole thing, but what do you think? What fabulous solid are these plaid-y cabins begging for? They will be on an off-white linen background. Just like this one. Only ironed. <br />
<br />
All wise insight and experience welcomed here. <br />
Or silly jokes. Whatever.<br />

I mean, by <em>my</em> standards, ie, hardly at all. But nothing is moving forward in any grand way, and this is bothering me.
<br />
<br />
I don't feel the need to set goals, or create deadlines, or anything like that. This is not about time management. It's simply about <em>time</em>, and how there isn't enough of it. Remember being about 10 years old and not having enough to do? Sounding good right around now...<br />
<br />
First off, I decided my logs needed some geese.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://australianmuseum.net.au/Uploads/Images/12181/pied%20geese%20on%20a%20log%201_big.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="Magpie Geese on a log" border="0" src="http://australianmuseum.net.au/Uploads/Images/12181/pied%20geese%20on%20a%20log%201_big.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ha ha! Doncha just love Google?!</div>
<br />
But seriously, folks...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgms-W8HIXhe8YHL1DY948n9bGlKDtgqowL4N5WnruLpqIib0g5qYoitcusn8rtfKTZFJpXkK6Ne8Dkk58jL94pD-LAXuy97gOcWr_eLLqfBYvDaORe7dgPGhg8NNVrqEY0hmsymxSyTDY/s1600/IMG_0231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgms-W8HIXhe8YHL1DY948n9bGlKDtgqowL4N5WnruLpqIib0g5qYoitcusn8rtfKTZFJpXkK6Ne8Dkk58jL94pD-LAXuy97gOcWr_eLLqfBYvDaORe7dgPGhg8NNVrqEY0hmsymxSyTDY/s400/IMG_0231.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Got about... erm... a lot more to make of these, and plan to get a bit more colourful and maybe even improv-y, if I can figure out how.<br />
<br />
Then a little movement on my house:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ek4jpQPpygrOKhb8nnKjlJ97Ax3ilhvGpWGhoqna9J5nQnCOQD5qv4YQtoC8LSPsC-EDrXvOkG31Eux1uuqxXNMW6W3wQ66uHPbJbRIcBEAjNNoFZ2l9MJW6uCATWMaItBlgezP9imQ/s1600/IMG_0237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ek4jpQPpygrOKhb8nnKjlJ97Ax3ilhvGpWGhoqna9J5nQnCOQD5qv4YQtoC8LSPsC-EDrXvOkG31Eux1uuqxXNMW6W3wQ66uHPbJbRIcBEAjNNoFZ2l9MJW6uCATWMaItBlgezP9imQ/s640/IMG_0237.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The ribbon trim and the chairs, in case you were wondering.<br />
<br />
I am also hand-stitching a chair onto the sunny side of the house, and at the rate it's going, should be finished right around 2014. If the stars align.<br />
<br />
And a couple of zippies, because they make me happy. One is a gift for a colleague - I just love the contrast in fabrics. <br />
<br />

Maybe I believe this most when I fall in love with the characters; the families, the friendships, the loss and redemption.
<br />
<br />
Here is a book all about a character whom I adore, and sincerely wished were real. (I secretly think he is.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teenreads.com.asp1-14.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/art/covers/140w/1565123077.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.teenreads.com.asp1-14.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/art/covers/140w/1565123077.jpg" width="206" /></a></div>
<br />
In "Clay's Quilt" by Silas House, we meet Clay Sizemore, a young man, a miner in the Appalachians: he drinks too much and gets wild, he loves nature, he is totally committed to his family, <em>everything</em> he does is done with great passion. His family story is also intense - his mother Anneth was the town's wildest child, killed when Clay is just four years old. There <em>are</em> actual quilts being stitched in this book, but they play a minor role. The real quilt of the title is the life that Clay creates by piecing together all the different elements of his history, family and hopes.<br />
<br />
One thread of this book follows Clay's efforts to learn who his mother was. It is an essential part of his journey to discovering who he is, at his core; his mother gains some dimensionality when we hear from those who knew and loved Anneth when she was alive.<br />
<br />
This book describes a part of the world I know nothing about, the hills of Kentucky, but I just drank it in: the close knit families, the place of religion and of nature in daily life, the alcohol, drugs and violence, the amazing music. I love to just open the pages at random and sink back into this place that Silas House created. His words don't leap off the page, they just gently seep into your bones, in a different rhythm to the words you're used to. This world House paints is so <em>rich</em>, I<em> </em>want to start saying "Hidy" to my friends in the morning, and to go clogging on Friday night in a smokey honky-tonk... <br />
<br />
On a scale of 1 - 5 yards*, I give this book a<strong> 5 YARD RATING</strong>.<br />
<br />
Pain, loss, redemption, religion, joy, love and crazy dancing - this book's got it all. Beautiful.<br />
If you try it, leave a comment and tell me what you thought!<br />
<br />
*Of course yards. I'm a quilter. How else would I measure anything?<br />

If you sew, even a little bit, you can figure these out for yourselves. But for those of you liking a little direction, here is a tutorialito* on how to sew 2 squares together and call it a gift.<br />

Cut pairs of squares - these are 6":<br />

<br />
With right sides facing each other, sew around 3 edges about 1/4" from the edge, twice, to give them a little extra strength. Trim the bottom corners if you feel like it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuQ6SQTdylFBpvCl0zLffMqSEwDRb9a7NwlikcortlnnmlJN1t-ZPZ5IBG0ExS92I5mlcdmVDf-zBmtXx6c3hJ2J2eL4nd4kt2WrVBoemY4O9WxYE1DAD9C7it9v36laeCD9a7Je5Z5G4/s1600/IMG_0201.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuQ6SQTdylFBpvCl0zLffMqSEwDRb9a7NwlikcortlnnmlJN1t-ZPZ5IBG0ExS92I5mlcdmVDf-zBmtXx6c3hJ2J2eL4nd4kt2WrVBoemY4O9WxYE1DAD9C7it9v36laeCD9a7Je5Z5G4/s400/IMG_0201.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold over about 1/2" at the open edge and iron it down:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRcpjz2fNaIcM_K-oXQVus_Z8EyfuZ4bvwgxdAkJFpkVFsU9ogO0uZPJwXynshX0eimvnPJtX48TPr7MN3Vr64UKJLUN6q9yNK-o4tXPocSV2yVHozIv4uN-yjCNh8v1NPBTGeevXMI-M/s1600/IMG_0203.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRcpjz2fNaIcM_K-oXQVus_Z8EyfuZ4bvwgxdAkJFpkVFsU9ogO0uZPJwXynshX0eimvnPJtX48TPr7MN3Vr64UKJLUN6q9yNK-o4tXPocSV2yVHozIv4uN-yjCNh8v1NPBTGeevXMI-M/s400/IMG_0203.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Turn it right side out (the folded down bit is now on the inside):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOS1KkEVtINZ36Sabbh8qgsWn6gdC8BQDymy4wa4wIK01FkK0V8721-mYM4FrxD8oTfdzAEON5c9hXwpDo2GmGXYZEvz2r4CchHX6v49QGXWnBjnJHTSEbN8YaAiUPUvJNvURljVFDxp4/s1600/IMG_0204.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOS1KkEVtINZ36Sabbh8qgsWn6gdC8BQDymy4wa4wIK01FkK0V8721-mYM4FrxD8oTfdzAEON5c9hXwpDo2GmGXYZEvz2r4CchHX6v49QGXWnBjnJHTSEbN8YaAiUPUvJNvURljVFDxp4/s400/IMG_0204.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Pour in enough rice so that the bag is about 1/3rd full when it's standing up, or a teeny bit more.<br />
<br />
While the bag is upright, pin across the rice to stop it from pouring out when you sew the opening closed:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1sOWEp_rrjTrhkdGP0K27bDV9RZKIb5nle-0jRdC8Aw0kLE05rOLhqQ8Y8z7MChGeQ_5jdvGuI9ttslRH-2pIkOloTAU2hOB32X1uobbv7uQL0WjJ9cVe56cAb9tr1RRKPa0HGXb9bxw/s1600/IMG_0205.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1sOWEp_rrjTrhkdGP0K27bDV9RZKIb5nle-0jRdC8Aw0kLE05rOLhqQ8Y8z7MChGeQ_5jdvGuI9ttslRH-2pIkOloTAU2hOB32X1uobbv7uQL0WjJ9cVe56cAb9tr1RRKPa0HGXb9bxw/s400/IMG_0205.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew a narrow rectangle across the top, about 1/2", and remove the pins:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-1-pBOG-MJI6A8HWZXd45YCewSZtna6D-XWj_7E-QeukLv4FfKEHnzC20lSZQq67NZMofTYnTZFWfOZqbsw0EObI1Dvd-tO0Fjyu85B9iyIRNjf9xH8lUmSOdVTYBRVrHr7hUdV-xJ30/s1600/IMG_0207.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-1-pBOG-MJI6A8HWZXd45YCewSZtna6D-XWj_7E-QeukLv4FfKEHnzC20lSZQq67NZMofTYnTZFWfOZqbsw0EObI1Dvd-tO0Fjyu85B9iyIRNjf9xH8lUmSOdVTYBRVrHr7hUdV-xJ30/s400/IMG_0207.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Tie the ends into knots and bury the threads. <br />
<br />
Ta-dah! Super speedy little gifts!<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Okay, now the small print :)<br />
<br />
You want to watch out for two things when you sew this up:<br />
1. the weight of the rice can make the package hard to control as you try to sew a neat line, and<br />
2. the corners might need need a little prodding from a tapestry needle (or awl of choice) to get the fabric moving under the foot. <br />
<br />
But don't let that get in your way! <br />
Just go do it!<br />
<br />
These rice bags can be juggled, balanced, warmed up in the microwave on cold-hand days, or just piled on a table for some eye candy.<br />
<br />
Or worn as decorative head-gear.<br />

I can't say how many because I lost track. And it's not even finished yet. But check out the details.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkF7nj8btWEji_QvLyeyaAaBzTL_BNj_QG39LJsjF4z7ldVzv8Obua6dRpL5uoEl683ftV6oY8WmUAtKH-sUhT720Lu-7ASEqPFUDPNmurZ5ODPOtQnngAtOpgDoX3LtcLR13u5-L7qMk/s1600/IMG_0176.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkF7nj8btWEji_QvLyeyaAaBzTL_BNj_QG39LJsjF4z7ldVzv8Obua6dRpL5uoEl683ftV6oY8WmUAtKH-sUhT720Lu-7ASEqPFUDPNmurZ5ODPOtQnngAtOpgDoX3LtcLR13u5-L7qMk/s640/IMG_0176.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This will be a gift for a very special friend. The last time I saw her, we met for coffee right after my phenomenal afternoon in <a href="http://pomegranatequilts.blogspot.co.il/2012/08/libertys.html" target="_blank">Liberty's</a>, so I was on a bit of a fabric high, and also totally thrilled to see my friend.<br />
<br />
So my very first piece was the cafe table. The construction was a bit convoluted, on account of me making it up as I went along, but it definitely began with a small oval of card, with white cotton fused to each side, which would help form the shape of the table.<br />
<br />
The fabric for the tablecloth - Liberty's! - was cunningly cut on the bias to hang beautifully, which worked not at all. I eventually forced it into place by sheer will and determination. This whole cardboard-lined piece was sewn by machine to the backing fabric following the lines of the table top, and then I hand overcast the edge of the slippery fabric to slow fraying.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Ge7WRbV3PDJPI3kuO-IT-Qcbuq_Y_qrL65CnpkhQPwIc5QLAamTDW2gjpBTsnu47GHyv2lo9SqEI5rtHvjxAgyUEjm4RZJgZkSdMUSkmN42za2b5-b8af0TZ_049z6EsROzhEUJfrEM/s1600/IMG_0178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Ge7WRbV3PDJPI3kuO-IT-Qcbuq_Y_qrL65CnpkhQPwIc5QLAamTDW2gjpBTsnu47GHyv2lo9SqEI5rtHvjxAgyUEjm4RZJgZkSdMUSkmN42za2b5-b8af0TZ_049z6EsROzhEUJfrEM/s320/IMG_0178.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Do not try this at home. Really.<br />
<br />
I created the flowers for the sunny-side window using lime green fabric with the thready bits from the selvedge showing, and some hand-cut red flowers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzycjR7cd1ckIjKIFS5G3DjPkwrhK0Qj-IWaK1vr4ZqIaF_Qq9CK722M8H85foIE7JLn8bVfhmjJpXctoMBW_k5LA5zDMdqW4v-V20dLJ9wYkAiFz1877pdDKW2G90Ut0McZBKxiN_PkU/s1600/IMG_0177.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzycjR7cd1ckIjKIFS5G3DjPkwrhK0Qj-IWaK1vr4ZqIaF_Qq9CK722M8H85foIE7JLn8bVfhmjJpXctoMBW_k5LA5zDMdqW4v-V20dLJ9wYkAiFz1877pdDKW2G90Ut0McZBKxiN_PkU/s320/IMG_0177.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The moon-side window has a Liberty's curtain (swoon!), and beneath the curtain, a window ledge of books.<br />

Woo-Hoo!Hey folks, this is a very exciting moment! I've been blogging a year!<br />
<br />
Here's what I've learned:<br />
I like blogging!<br />
I want to sew and blog more than I do.<br />
The main and most important thing that has happened this year, is that I have met a wonderful quilty community across the globe and made new friends. Thank you all!!<br />
<br />
Now onto the good stuff - it's Giveaway Time!<br />
<br />
A special day deserves a special celebration, and I just want to share some stash goodness and give someone else a happy day too! Which is where you come in. <br />
<br />
I have this <strike>obsession with</strike> mild habit of making little stash collections. Purples-with-maroons. Greys. Light greys. (Two <em>totally</em> different categories, duh.) Stuff to match <a href="http://pomegranatequilts.blogspot.co.il/2012/09/be-still-my-heart.html" target="_blank">my</a> Midtown Miami. Text. <br />

But I've been doing a lot of traveling... Sadly, my father is not well, and lives in the UK, and, well... I don't. So I've been getting to know the ins and outs of international travel, and more importantly have been spending some quality time with my parents.<br />
<br />
During my most recent visit, I carried with me a small sandwich of natural muslin and batting, and a bag of embroidery threads, just in case I had some moments of peaceful sitting, when I could work on a quiet project. <br />
<br />
It came to me, one morning, what my project would be.<br />
<br />
See, I made this quilt a few years ago, to celebrate my parents' 40th anniversary. At the root of the trunk are my parents' names embroidered in gold thread; each branch has the names of a sister and her husband; each hand-leaf is the actual outline of a grandchild's hand, embroidered with their name, and sewn on the "correct" branch! It was an epic project, took me 5 years from idea to completion (in my defense: I did give birth several times during those 5 years...)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqrCda_mM1CKe5Is8i84Oxoawv_M2vOFCAvncfIcrml8Mu7AnCR5s-1D2vgEDp07cXh_tuFCX2OdaJKtKgv-7VtKzI6yjLqDrW5-iBNNi-_ur1FBczfdc2hpGJxXsm9tR1zk73Tq0MXIY/s1600/CIMG1276.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqrCda_mM1CKe5Is8i84Oxoawv_M2vOFCAvncfIcrml8Mu7AnCR5s-1D2vgEDp07cXh_tuFCX2OdaJKtKgv-7VtKzI6yjLqDrW5-iBNNi-_ur1FBczfdc2hpGJxXsm9tR1zk73Tq0MXIY/s640/CIMG1276.JPG" width="550" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt hangs in my parents home, so I saw it daily during my visit, and one morning, sitting in the sunlight by my father's bed, I realised that we don't have my father's hand-print on it. I quickly traced around each of my parents' hands, and cut out their handprints to use as a pattern. I traced around the paper patterns using a regular pencil onto my muslin and got stitching.<br />
<br />
Here's what I've got so far:<br />

My parents asked what I was going to do with it. I admitted I didn't know - a wallhanging, perhaps? A pillow cover? My mother said, It should be the centre of a quilt. I think she wants one of her own :) since I <a href="http://pomegranatequilts.blogspot.co.il/2013/03/ta-da-announcing-my-fastest-quilt-ever.html" target="_blank">just made one</a> for Daddy who won't let it off his lap long enough to be washed! I enjoy the hand-stitching very, very much, and see this as the beginning of a long, treasured, slow-stitched process. <br />
<br />
True story: on my flight back home, I sat next to 2 little kids who were pretty adorable (not mine :) and when I whipped out my hand-stitching, they demanded to be taught how I was doing it. On the scrappy edges of my sandwich, I taught a 10 year old girl and a 9 year old boy how to back-stitch. I explained how I traced hands onto muslin, and they are so excited to go home and make their own! Yay, passing sewing on to the next generation!<br />
<br />
And, a finish! This will be a birthday gift for a colleague (shhh, don't tell).<br />

The floral is from a piece of fabric I bought in Liberty's about, errm... 25 years ago! (Oh lordy! I ain't getting any younger!) I didn't photograph all the ways in which I messed this one up, but let's just say that I unstitched as much as I stitched... But she's finished now, and quite lovely.<br />

Coming of age story? Check.<br />
Got quilting in it? Check. <br />
<br />
I was jumping up and down with excitement when I discovered this in my local library (O Bala Cynwyd Library! How do I love thee?) and later again, when I bought my very own copy for numerous re-reads.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTwKgxPxBPbIHA1DTSg6_vG_Q8mSoxxsoA7BY4YOfjUKNK0xJgxfQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" class="rg_i" data-sz="f" height="200" name="sOWc4mv7T8QJOM:" src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTwKgxPxBPbIHA1DTSg6_vG_Q8mSoxxsoA7BY4YOfjUKNK0xJgxfQ" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="128" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"These is My Words" (by Nancy E. Turner) tells the tale of a family heading out to Arizona territory in the late 1800's as narrated by Sarah Prine, a teenager when our story begins. This has a bit of a Little-House-All-Grown-Up feel to it, though "These is My Words" is grittier, scarier and more realistic than the Little House books, with descriptions of terrifying events, great despair and lots of gun slinging. But like "Little House," it maintains the same kind of wonder at the possibilities of new opportunity, and the hope of building a community together. We also get some romance, though to my great relief, the book doesn't end with church bells; we get to follow the couple through thick and thin, as two strong-willed characters forge a life together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why do I keep coming back to this book to curl up with? To start with, it's pretty easy to read: this is a diary of an ordinary woman made extraordinary by circumstance, and she is both full of great spirit and a wonderful story-teller. Secondly, I like the main characters! Sarah is fiesty and smart, her sister-in-law is kind and deeply religious, the men are sometimes strong, sometimes sweet. Laziness or shiftiness in anyone is not tolerated, an attitude I definitely appreciate! Thirdly, I really did enjoy learning about this time and place in history, and how the area developed and changed over the span of the book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
On a scale of 1 - 5 yards*, I give this book a<strong> 4 YARD RATING</strong>.<br />
<br />
Awesome reading if you like this genre. Very satisfying.<br />
If you try it, leave a comment and tell me what you thought!<br />

Oh come <em>on</em>. Wordless? Me?<br />
<br />
I have been thinking about the recipient of this quilt, and what they might think is interesting, and if the blocks are too dull, and wondering what fabric I could use for the negative space to make the blocks shine, until finally I had the most free-ing thought: I want this quilt! I would love to snuggle up with this, and feel fabrics silky and jeansy, flannely and velvety.<br />
<br />
I reckon if I want it, someone else might like it too. I have to stop double-guessing every strip I place, and just get on with making something I'm proud of.<br />

<br />
I don't know where this thought emerged from, or why. Suffice it to say that back then I lived in the Bronx, within walking distance of a New York Public Library (be still my heart). I took out just about every book I could find on the subject, and thereby taught myself to quilt.<br />
<br />
On the way to my first ever quilt - and by the way, it was a trip-around-the-world though I didn't know it yet, and the batting didn't reach all the way to the edges - I accidentally got a book out of the library that had every appearance of being helpful, but it wasn't, in any practical sense. It was called "Quilting Lessons".<br />

<br />
I loved this book the first time I read it, and I have read it more times than I care to admit since then, and I'm still not bored. <br />
<br />
Janet Berlo was, at the time of writing this book, a 40-something art historian who fell into a deep depression. As she entered her depression, she left her academic world - which had already become alien and threatening to her - and emmersed herself almost obsessively into the world of quilting. Over time, the quilting became a therapeutic tool for her emotional healing, providing the title of this book, her quilting lessons.<br />
<br />
Well, Berlo is a writer by profession, so her brief essays are beautifully composed and tightly edited. My only critique is that she is a teeny <em>tiny</em> bit self-absorbed? A true mark of depression, as we know, but it can still be a bit wearying to wade through. <br />
<br />
However, this is a true telling of healing from mental anguish, from her terse early words: "I was piecing for cover. I was quilting to save my life." to the final, healthier, pages of her book "...remembering always to make time to smell the sage or to bring groceries to the old ladies and talk with them quietly for a half hour. These acts of grace are fundamental to life's educational process too."<br />
<br />
But this short book doesn't simply chart a journey through depression. Berlo explores the vital place of creative work in women's lives, the power of sisterhood, the process of creativity, and tells us many stories along the way about her travels, her family, her work - in other words, her <em>life</em>.<br />
<br />
On a scale of 1 - 5 yards*, I give this book a<strong> 4 YARD RATING</strong>.<br />
<br />
This is a great book if you're in the right mood: a blend of academic analysis and engaging story-telling is used to describe one woman's trip to hell and back via handwork. If you've read it before, or if you pick it up soon, tell us what you thought!<br />

<br />
Firstly, let's explore the craziness.<br />
What was the most insane sewing project you undertook? I mean, most-hours-invested-on-most-fruitless-project?<br />
<br />
Here's mine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnDg1QME9MfGhN61TT6uKRp31e3eZpc66zmpKRKCXzVwQse-jA8fGbtGjFD-PCxTDPkejzi_eBmqdt40ptWxXptV6MuDDfBvY5rGIjL-m3bVmWya5n0PVVMthJt9xNNETXrzGUze-ox-4/s1600/IMG_0116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnDg1QME9MfGhN61TT6uKRp31e3eZpc66zmpKRKCXzVwQse-jA8fGbtGjFD-PCxTDPkejzi_eBmqdt40ptWxXptV6MuDDfBvY5rGIjL-m3bVmWya5n0PVVMthJt9xNNETXrzGUze-ox-4/s400/IMG_0116.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In over a decade of sewing, I have not spent so much time on a project more likely to be lost, broken or forgotten. Because this was made for a 12 year old who is apt, well, let's just say, who is apt to lose, break and forget things. In fact, for your average 12 year old - or at least, for mine - if it is no longer actually in front of one's eyes at this very minute, it doesn't necessarily exist.<br />
<br />
However. He very much loved this project, and bugged me to very much stop in the middle so he could very much have and hold it right this very second, until death (or simple forgetfulness) do them part. Naturally I ignored him. I finished the beading,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZK56v_0nNpnl7NelYZyxBnh8Tf0ePqI6f7fCM7o_f_bESq8eMcUDVxES3gkuJ8gUcmpMC6Po_zXWwPv0t1ZwhDxjt4dnIkyCPPkPfu5oKriVByJFf6ZMYbHvO3SGhTamHRtgUANo9qb0/s1600/IMG_0120.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZK56v_0nNpnl7NelYZyxBnh8Tf0ePqI6f7fCM7o_f_bESq8eMcUDVxES3gkuJ8gUcmpMC6Po_zXWwPv0t1ZwhDxjt4dnIkyCPPkPfu5oKriVByJFf6ZMYbHvO3SGhTamHRtgUANo9qb0/s400/IMG_0120.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
and then made the boy a pencil case he can be proud of. Until he forgets it exists.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI_qlUAYn3Y-3EFUhU8mSW4MtR7CAFA8YuqSEGexLlk6BemH4PkUKYOvyP8os10tddxhChBsV9c5hN0WCkM5BJzjhLFKkaBRslQ-H_J2IDYe1u9HDelv_xya8z5WbVliafNzL8s3mcSfg/s1600/IMG_0123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI_qlUAYn3Y-3EFUhU8mSW4MtR7CAFA8YuqSEGexLlk6BemH4PkUKYOvyP8os10tddxhChBsV9c5hN0WCkM5BJzjhLFKkaBRslQ-H_J2IDYe1u9HDelv_xya8z5WbVliafNzL8s3mcSfg/s400/IMG_0123.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, a log cabin update, for those dedicated readers who are waiting with bated breath...</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5khM6_cGTKgl4hjItv6mXyfwYqGCwyDz-uQqfHFVSQaGAf4II5na_VsNpXTQEo3-d7AtGphJTJnTcpEIqHSVo5rWjS8tr8XO6lE90AiZhDFggZWP6m9t92j-FEKR9OPQ0UR4_8EpMp5s/s1600/IMG_0108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5khM6_cGTKgl4hjItv6mXyfwYqGCwyDz-uQqfHFVSQaGAf4II5na_VsNpXTQEo3-d7AtGphJTJnTcpEIqHSVo5rWjS8tr8XO6lE90AiZhDFggZWP6m9t92j-FEKR9OPQ0UR4_8EpMp5s/s400/IMG_0108.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI5OUBYEEWFQrDxFuafiFEhwoO6Qzzk5C-zvi3XConvxdbgvCR7YBrtaNIeKCGcviXgOe3gKdggVeZAZi21A7_Iu31SZQqWBcpduS_rnyCpBcxaF4dF4ctp3ZrHHRp3NkznBVSMYC2dN0/s1600/IMG_0112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI5OUBYEEWFQrDxFuafiFEhwoO6Qzzk5C-zvi3XConvxdbgvCR7YBrtaNIeKCGcviXgOe3gKdggVeZAZi21A7_Iu31SZQqWBcpduS_rnyCpBcxaF4dF4ctp3ZrHHRp3NkznBVSMYC2dN0/s400/IMG_0112.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I included the rulers in case you thought the wonkiness was due to odd camera angles. Not so. They are due to odd sewing angles.</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And in honour of the whole process thing, some honest deconstructive happenings:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxJZQoqwhBml1ltn50PgVu0CqAd6pfR1heISRCw1hUfs4NOPJiWKY5ykIroJGgC_6mLhWGgD_rA6Deg2-9ci-91hbJ6Ia5hN3a8rhflmVpc7cnVQR_-6FoC9dZjQDOEMDCqLPZ2Yd013A/s1600/IMG_0128.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxJZQoqwhBml1ltn50PgVu0CqAd6pfR1heISRCw1hUfs4NOPJiWKY5ykIroJGgC_6mLhWGgD_rA6Deg2-9ci-91hbJ6Ia5hN3a8rhflmVpc7cnVQR_-6FoC9dZjQDOEMDCqLPZ2Yd013A/s320/IMG_0128.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, some process-y thoughts: now that I have had a 24 hour break since I took these photos, I see them more clearly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They are dull as rocks. (Oops - did I say that out loud?) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I LOVE them dearly, of <em>course</em>. They are my babies, after all. But I definitely need to inject some light into them. That single orange strip made the block glow a little. I have to find some more ways to achieve that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would like to pick your considerable brains: I plan on a great deal of negative space, and think a "natural" background would be best - I'm thinking something linenny? (Yes, it is a word. So there.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wise readers, pray tell, what would make an awesome background to these blocks? What fabric have you used that had a textured look (like muslin or linen), felt soft and delicious, and was easy to sew and quilt through? Does such a thing even exist? Thank you in advance for your words of genius. I appreciate them muchly.</div>

I am somewhat addicted to books, possibly as addicted to books as to fabric (don't tell my fabric, it could start a civil war.) So, starting today, Tuesdays will be my day to discuss books.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/The_Fault_in_Our_Stars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/The_Fault_in_Our_Stars.jpg" width="218" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought this book because I liked the theme: two teenagers with cancer fall in love. I cannot pass up a good book about suffering and redemption (<em>redemption</em> being the key here, I hope you know that about me.) (You knew that, right?), and I LOVE good young adult fiction. And someone put them together into this neat little package for me; thank you, John Green!<br />
<br />
Good young adult fiction is fantastic because: <br />
1. the author has to be a great writer, otherwise said teenager will (rightly) give up on the book in about 30 seconds or less;<br />
<br />
2. the themes tend to run along interesting, big picture issues, because that's what teenagers love to think about and discuss ad nauseam, if I remember correctly; and<br />
<br />
3. I am a tired mother of several who also has a job outside of the home, and I appreciate a book that is a quick read. Generally speaking, no matter how complex a linguistic tone the young adult fiction writer sets, I won't have to squint to concentrate. Right?<br />
<br />
Mr Green <em>is</em> a great writer, and his characters are believable and lovable and smart. Did I say smart? Green's 17 year olds have a more extensive vocabulary than, well... than anyone I know. And to be honest, I know quite a few people, and many of them went to Ivy League colleges. But for some reason, I found that our characters' super-stylised, uber-genius patterns of speech were delightful and not annoying. These teens are smart and funny; who doesn't want to read <em>that</em>? On account of having dealt with their own cancer for at least a year, they are also cool with the whole suffering and death thing, an interesting turnaround on the usual teen angst.<br />
<br />
There is a plot line that runs along the lines of boy-meets-girl, but way, way better. It's not really "two teenagers with cancer fall in love," it's more, "two brilliant, sassy, funny, insightful, wise teenagers with
cancer fall in love and teach us all how to live in an
imperfect world with a great attitude." There are moments of pure beauty, and great disappointments, glimpses into suffering both through illness and out of it, and lots of eyerolling, too. (Theirs, not mine.)<br />
<br />
On a scale of 1 - 5 yards*, I give this book a<strong> 5 YARD RATING</strong>.<br />
<br />
Which means: compulsory viewing. Find it at your local bookstore, library or friend's bookcase. Beg, borrow or steal it. Whatever it takes. And tell me what you thought, especially if you disagree with me. I love me a good book debate.<br />
<br />
<br />

Plaid! Log Cabins!A project I've been thinking about for a while has finally reached a Washed-And-Ironed status. A Ready-to-<i>Roll</i> moment. A Be-Still-My-Heart pile.<br />
<br />
Of course I now have to introduce my friends the fabrics to each and every one of you...<br />
<br />
First, we have..... the PLAIDS! (And the crowd went <i>wild</i>!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinGw1c2P4JlNC9LwMroe0wHuR-sO4vQ-dY1xJcTdhqr1X10jZKNSPR6Ff31U6qILPQhm13FfmudlrvY8Stb4yqLyqNsJF-N_FvVDT4LZ3qgtEOgDhzb5mM82PH0gZY11k5xsFnHrIHKvw/s1600/IMG_0093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinGw1c2P4JlNC9LwMroe0wHuR-sO4vQ-dY1xJcTdhqr1X10jZKNSPR6Ff31U6qILPQhm13FfmudlrvY8Stb4yqLyqNsJF-N_FvVDT4LZ3qgtEOgDhzb5mM82PH0gZY11k5xsFnHrIHKvw/s400/IMG_0093.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I hand-picked these (hand-clicked? online shopping poses some linguistic issues here) for this very project. This quilt is for a special and plaid-y kinda guy. I'm not sure about the lowest one, it's a bit brown. But keeping my mind open.<br />
<br />
Neeeext... the STASHLETS!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM_s9LwvRuzqegaw7KOCq_wY3n1RXg1jHtIZqzeYKli2RP9aRLCa28YOP1kDgRV1GH2o42durX0x2SWjf31z3VdNYLDnvg5pjUzSoESiV4Lx0WzEmnLLTsaP-siqEJJP9WZT5IrOZcWvs/s1600/IMG_0092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM_s9LwvRuzqegaw7KOCq_wY3n1RXg1jHtIZqzeYKli2RP9aRLCa28YOP1kDgRV1GH2o42durX0x2SWjf31z3VdNYLDnvg5pjUzSoESiV4Lx0WzEmnLLTsaP-siqEJJP9WZT5IrOZcWvs/s400/IMG_0092.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Some flannel from another project (Woolies, the best and thickest and yummiest flannel <i>ever</i>,) and this gorgeous blue cotton whose beauty defies being captured on camera, with fine, barely-there, fractured lines, mmmm.<br />
<br />
Finally, the one, the only.... the UPCYCLEDS!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlTDAHIpYS4dJstAVrFFSBX2dV5il4U3z_3TMIVxqIcVX4sxXWb4meLyjgZq-iWGtEZwm3dPD0lqxqNjI-kXBUl9Yd_ghqcXgk6DyvExgvdaGQRhvXxKr15IQX4EN2v54w1hogcMn19XM/s1600/IMG_0089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlTDAHIpYS4dJstAVrFFSBX2dV5il4U3z_3TMIVxqIcVX4sxXWb4meLyjgZq-iWGtEZwm3dPD0lqxqNjI-kXBUl9Yd_ghqcXgk6DyvExgvdaGQRhvXxKr15IQX4EN2v54w1hogcMn19XM/s400/IMG_0089.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yup, these were each once part of a garment... dark and light jeans (to go with the plaid, duh,) some soft, light linen from a shirt, and some wine-colour velvet, unexpectedly flowy.<br />
<br />
And here they are, visiting with each other, becoming a family.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am in love. <i>Big</i> love.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Gonna make me some bad log cabins. Watch this space.</div>
